John “Jack” Kappelman is a PhD candidate at UCLA in the Department of Political Science. He uses causal inference methodologies to study representation, political behavior, and public policy in state and local governments in the United States. Much of Jack’s research has centered on studying the politics of firearm ownership, ranging from studies of firearm-based violence and suicide, to work assessing the effects of policies designed to reduce gun violence. His ongoing work examines the politics of gun ownership, as well as the effects of mass shootings on legislative behavior, and the political economy of gun purchasing. He is a member of the Practical Causal Inference (PCI) Lab, and works as a researcher on a project examining the intersection of alcohol use and firearm-involved deaths funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Jack earned his BA in Political Science and Master of Public Administration concurrently from the University of Alabama.
