UCLA Interdisciplinary Conference on Gun Violence Reduction
May 17, 2025
Laureate Room at UCLA’s Luskin Conference Center
425 Westwood Plaza, Los Angeles, CA 90095
Mission
Establish a community at UCLA of scholars, students, and greater Los Angeles partners to promote interdisciplinary, creative, and evidence-based solutions to reduce, prevent, and manage gun injuries in the United States.
Why are we hosting this conference?
Our home.
Located in Southern California, Los Angeles (LA) contains about 25% of California’s total population and suffered 32% of all gun homicides in California from 2016-2021.
There are known inequities in who is impacted by gun violence. In 2020, the firearm homicide rate for Black people in LA was three times that of the county overall.
Gun violence is a rapidly growing, yet preventable, societal challenge in the United States. Firearm injuries are currently the leading cause of death in children and adolescents ages 1-19.
Why at UCLA?
UCLA is a leading institution in education and research excellence. Many academic departments at UCLA are home to renowned national experts in gun violence. Yet, there is not currently a coordinated effort for groups at UCLA to address the problem of firearm violence collectively campus-wide.
This conference seeks to build a community at UCLA of people working to reduce, prevent, and manage gun violence in the United States. Multifaceted problems such as gun violence require multifaceted solutions, and this interdisciplinary conference is just one step towards that goal.
